Buddhism 101 Class: This program is designed to give beginner's in Buddhism an overview of the basic teachings of the Buddha and to help beginner's start a meditation practice. We will begin with a short series of chants in English--an abridged version of the regular chants we do at Dieu Phap Temple. Then there will be a short Dharma talk on subjects such as the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, the Six Perfections and so on. This will be followed by a question and answer session. The program will conclude with a brief explanation of a basic Buddhist meditation technique to help us calm the mind and cultivate concentration and awareness. We will then do a short meditation of perhaps 15 minutes.
It is recommended that students bring something to write with in order to take notes during the Dharma talk and Q & A session. It is also recommended that students wear clothing that will be comfortable for some bowing and sitting on the floor. Tight jeans and short skirts would be uncomfortable, as would loose or low-cut blouses for women.
